Lecture: The Call to Create

The Call to Create explores the hopes, visions, and wisdom that fosters a rich creative life by identifying and working with the insecurities, doubts, and obstacles that sabatoge our efforts to create change in our lives. To this end I identify archetypal characters within ourselves that help and/or hinder creativity and transformation, using stories from artists and ordinary people, my own personal struggles, as well as examples from films, literature, fairy tales, and myths that illustrate the struggles we all go through in the creative process whether it is expressed in art or daily life. We are all called to create, i.e., to bring to birth something new in our lives and the world, and it is my hope that by understanding the inner characters that I describe can help those who seek to find, recover, devote, and apply their inherent creativity to their personal lives and to society.

Workshop: Creativity and the Veil of Addiction
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011
We all live in an age of addiction to power, control, speed, money, codependency, food, drugs, alcohol, romance, sex, and even the internet. I will draw upon the archetypal characters that I see underlying addictions and also how they relate to creativity. I will also draw parallels between stages of creativity and the twelve steps of recovery. In the workshop - which is based upon my book, Witness to the Fire - participants will have an opportunity to share their wisdom, insights, images, experiences, and dreams that relate to both the topic of the lecture and the workshop. A simple exercise will be part of the way we can learn to work with this material. Click here for event poster

Presenter bio: Linda Leonard, Ph.D. is a Jungian Analyst trained in Zurich and the author of 6 books: The Wounded Woman, On the Way to the Wedding, Witness to the Fire, Meeting the Madwoman, Following the Reindeer Woman, and The Call to Create. Her books have been translated into 16 languages and she lectures and gives seminars world-wide. She is a founding member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and has been in private practice for 40 years. She gives consultations by phone and face to face on topics in her books with a particular focus on the creative process. She is also a former professor of philosophy with a Ph.D. in that subject.

Bio: Kelly Polanski is a native Albertan and Jungian Analyst Candidate in private practice in downtown Edmonton. She has earned her Masters in Psychotherapy from St. Stephen’s College and “Bachelor of Commerce” from the University of Alberta. In addition to a twenty-five year business career prior to becoming a psychotherapist, Kelly has enjoyed being a life-long artist informed by images offered as expressions of soul. She is currently undertaking rigorous training at the C. G. Jung Institute in Switzerland, leading to accreditation by the International Association of Analytic Psychologists as a Jungian Analyst.

Projection and Relationship

What is the nature of relationship? 


Why do things “go wrong” in relationship? 


Why do we fall in love with certain people and not others?


How do we know we are relating to the other person?


What parts do the “inner world” and “outer world” play in relationship? 


We all are drawn toward relationship(s) of various sorts: lover, friend, parent, child, spouse, the “gods”, bosses, neighbors, the clerk at Safeway. It seems to be an inborn “instinct” for human beings; that is to say that relationship is fundamental to human experience even if we choose to “opt out” of relationship. For example, to become a monk or nun or a spiritual wanderer in practice only results in a more intense relationship to one’s chosen God, to oneself, to nature, etc. Come join us for a presentation that will investigate the nature of projection in the process of relationship.

Presenter bio: Jim is a clinical psychologist who did his graduate work at Antioch University in San Francisco and has been practicing psychotherapy and counselling for over 26 years. His interests in graduate school and since have been in object-relations, ego psychology and Jungian depth psychotherapy. He also has post-graduate training specializing in systemic couples/family therapy and group therapy. He has experience working in out-patient psychiatry, residential treatment centres, as well as private and group practice settings. He has a special interest in intimacy (both interpersonal and intra-psychic) and the psychological processes that that interfere with it.

C.G. Jung's Warning about Faith: The Psychological Danger of Belief

If it was not obvious earlier, it has become dramatically apparent since the experiences of 9/11 that religious belief can be dangerous to the health of the body politic. However, 87 years before the tragic events of 2001, C.G. Jung had observed that belief is dangerous, not only in the socio-political domain, but also to the psyche. In the recently published The Red Book, from a section likely written in 1914 when he was 39 years old, Jung says forthrightly:  “I believe that it is better in our time if belief is weak…. It is dangerous to believe too much.”  Dr. Miller’s presentation will inquire into what Jung may have meant by these strong words. It will explore Jung’s warning about the psychological danger of belief, connecting Jung’s view to a growing contemporary literature that seeks to separate personal belief from authentic faith.

Presenter bio: David L. Miller is Watson-Ledden Professor of Religion Emeritus at Syracuse University and is a retired Core Faculty Member at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.  Since 1963, Dr. Miller has worked at the intersections of religions and mythologies, literature and literary theory, and depth psychology. He has taught at the Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, and in the clinical programs at Pacifica Graduate Institute in California, as well as having given seminars in Jung training programs in Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Kyoto.  In 2002, Dr. Miller was elected to be an Affiliate Member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and in 2004 he was made an honorary member of the International Association of Analytical Psychology.

Dr. Miller is a frequent lecturer to civic, religious, and educational groups in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. He was a member of the Eranos Circle in Ascona, Switzerland, from 1975 to 1988, and he lectured at the Eranos Conferences nine times during that period.  Dr. Miller is the author of more than one hundred articles and book chapters, as well as five books. The books include: Gods and Games: Towards a Theology of Play (1970, 1973); The New Polytheism: Rebirth of the Gods and Goddesses (1974, 1981, also in French, Italian, and Japanese editions); Christs: Archetypal Images in Christian Theology (1981, 2005); Three Faces of God: Traces of the Trinity in Literature and Life (1986, 2005); and Hells and Holy Ghosts: A Theopoetics of Christian Belief (1989, 2004). Dr. Miller is also the editor of two additional books: Interpretation: The Poetry of Meaning (1967) and Jung and the Interpretation of the Bible (1995).
