ANNOUNCEMENT: AFFECT AND ACTION: PSYCHE IN A TIME OF CRISIS

August 8-10, 2012
Proposal Deadline: December 15, 2011

The title of this conference, Affect and Action: Psyche in a Time of Crisis can and should be interpreted from a wide variety of positions. For instance, on an individual level, in personal times of crisis, what are the possibilities, relationships, and consequences of affect and of action? On a socio-political level, the theme acknowledges the variety of manifest emotional and active responses globally to the onslaught of crises facing humanity and the centrality of psyche in articulating, holding and acting on these concerns. Our world seems split and in turmoil. Cultures and values clash. Numerous countries are positioned in a state of armed international conflict. Economically, life is no more secure. Environmental catastrophe looms. Our world feels fragile. Papers addressing the theme within literature and all the arts, philosophy, clinical practice, religious studies, the sciences, Jungian Studies, or any other scholarly field are welcome.
How to respond? This is one of the psychological challenges of our age. Jung reminds us that the task of individuation is central in understanding the complexities of our role in the world.

The Program Committee welcomes submissions for research papers (single, joint or multi-authored), round tables (works in progress), panels, workshops, poster sessions and artistic presentations which explore the conference theme. You are invited to submit a 500-word (max) proposal. Please format it suitably so that it can be published as an abstract in the conference program. Please note, that the academic organizing committee may exercise its prerogative to reallocate presentation formats other than those originally applied for.

Please email your proposal to the Chair of the Program Committee, Jennifer Selig: jenniferlselig@gmail.com by December 15, 2011.

A Hands-on art workshop based on the folktale “Three Golden Hairs”as told in Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Visual Journaling is a creative way to express experiences, thoughts, feelings and great for people who don’t remember their dreams or do remember and want to express them visually. No art training is necessary, just an openness to learning a new mode of expression

Creating art, exploring, expressing ourselves is action. Often when we identify how we feel, we stop and wish it all away. But feelings don't just disappear. We've cast them into the watery depths where they tumble and sink before bubbling upwards.

Ficino and Pico della Mirandola taught that we need to be the artists, poets, musicians of our own life. By making art of our deep wishes, feelings and desires, we express ourselves, transform our lives and give it new meaning.
